Raven Rock Report

Raven Rock Report | August-September 2019

The crisp, cool evening will cast shadows as the sun drips onto the Kelly green fairways of Sahalee Country Club as you pull up to the porta cache where Rosy, our mini Horse Counselor Ambassador will be waiting to welcome you to the 8th Annual Raven Rock Auction and Dinner Gala. Saturday, October 12th, 2019 is the evening that we will share with our beloved supporters, donors and real Raven Rock Family members some of the miracles that we have witnessed here at the ranch. It will be an evening of celebration of victories over addiction, human trafficking, drug abuse, suicide ideation, helplessness and hopelessness. You will meet Victors and those who fight the good fight to help them reach their God-given potential. Our dinner is delicious, wine tasty, auction items exciting and the company couldn’t be better! Please join us and bring someone you know who loves kids, horses or great victories over some of the evil in our society today. You won’t be disappointed.

One such miracle is the story of a young lady who was adopted from another country as a child. She had her share of anger, symptomatic lying, stealing and cheating while having a very difficult time in school, both academically and socially. Jan often wondered if it was worth it to get up in the morning-if ending her life might be “easier” for everyone involved. Often she arrived still screaming and yelling at her mom who drove her to the ranch. After she got out of the car, it took quite a while to calm down.

When she came to Raven Rock, she was insecure, self-centered and quite opinionated about how to treat a horse. At Raven Rock, we do not use force of any kind with horse (or people for that matter!) and it frustrated her that the horse was allowed to have an opinion. She knew we could force her horse to do what she wanted it to do, but we wouldn’t even allow her to kick the horse to make him go. The more frustrated she became, the less cooperative her horse became.

This went on for a few months until the day she recognized that SHE was the biggest influence on her horse. That when she softened, and actually cared about him and what he was feeling, he would do anything for her. As she grew in understanding, self-control and empathy, the bond with her horse grew, too. They have a real relationship that relies on trust and respect instead of dominance and aggression.

Jan was offered a special scholarship to a school that fit her learning style and talents perfectly and now she gets to bed on time, gets her homework done and is looking at a lucrative career after graduation. We have had faith in her all along, and so did her beloved horse. It just took his strong but clear message of empathy to bring her into a real relationship.
